I bake dog cakes professionally, and I will happily teach you to bake one at home — a good DIY cake beats a bad bought one every time. This is the exact recipe I started with before BaliPetParty existed, adapted to ingredients you can find in any Bali supermarket, with real prices. Read the safety section first; it is the most important part of this page.
First, the Rules: What Must Never Go In
Also skip what is merely a bad idea: regular sugar in quantity, salt, heavy butter and cream, and anything spiced. Dogs want flavour they understand — banana, peanut butter, pumpkin, yoghurt, meat. The "chocolate" look in professional pet cakes comes from carob, a naturally sweet pod that bakes like cocoa with none of the toxicity; in Bali, look for carob powder in health-food stores in Canggu and Ubud or online (about IDR 60,000–90,000 a bag).
Ingredients (and What They Cost in Bali)
- 2 ripe bananas — IDR 10,000
- 250 g plain wheat flour, or rice flour for sensitive stomachs — IDR 10,000–18,000
- 2 eggs — IDR 6,000
- 120 g xylitol-free peanut butter (read the label twice) — IDR 35,000–50,000
- 1 tsp baking powder — IDR 5,000
- 2 tbsp honey (optional, skip for overweight dogs) — IDR 10,000
- Plain unsweetened yoghurt for frosting, about 200 g — IDR 25,000
- Optional: 2 tbsp carob powder for the "chocolate" layer — IDR 15,000 worth
- Decoration: a dog biscuit, blueberries, or a strawberry — IDR 15,000
Total: roughly IDR 150,000–250,000, makes one 15 cm cake — enough for a birthday dog plus three or four guests in sensible portions.
Step by Step
Prep (10 min)
Heat the oven to 175°C. Grease a 15 cm tin with a little coconut oil. Mash the bananas to a paste.
Mix wet, then dry (10 min)
Whisk eggs, banana, peanut butter and honey until smooth. Fold in flour and baking powder — and carob, if using. The batter is thick; that is correct.
Bake (30–35 min)
Bake until a skewer comes out clean. Bali humidity adds a few minutes — trust the skewer, not the clock.
Cool completely (1 hour)
A warm cake melts yoghurt frosting into soup, and a hot centre can burn an eager mouth. Full patience, full hour.
Frost and decorate (10 min)
Strain the yoghurt briefly for a thicker frost, spread, and decorate with a biscuit and berries. Write the name with peanut butter from a piping bag if you are feeling brave.
The Mistakes I See Most
The label skim. Xylitol poisoning from "healthy" peanut butter is the classic DIY disaster — read the ingredients list, not the front of the jar. The generous slice. A birthday cake is a treat, not a meal: a chihuahua portion is a couple of tablespoons, a retriever portion is a modest wedge, and the rest keeps refrigerated for 2–3 days. The decoration drift. Sprinkles, chocolate buttons and sugar paste sneak in at the decorating stage because they look festive — they are exactly the ingredients this recipe exists to avoid. The day-of bake. Bake the evening before; party mornings have no spare hour for cooling.
When It's Easier to Order
Baking for one dog is a joy. Baking a tiered cake for eight guest dogs with two allergies between them, in a villa kitchen, on party morning — that is a job, and it is ours if you want it. Our pet bakery makes party-size cakes from IDR 350,000 with chilled delivery, and every party package includes one. Not sure whether your recipe idea is safe? Message us on WhatsApp — a quick ingredient sanity-check is free, and we would genuinely rather check your label than hear the story afterwards.
